Kathmandu Metropolitan City has announced a new policy offering free parking for up to two hours at its self-operated parking facilities, as part of the implementation of the Economic Act 2082 for the fiscal year 2082/83.
Under the new regulation, vehicles parked at municipally managed parking lots will incur no charges for the first two hours. However, if parking exceeds two hours, fees will apply from the start of the parking duration. Two-wheelers will be charged NPR 15 per 30 minutes, while four-wheelers will be charged NPR 25 per 30 minutes. For instance, parking a two-wheeler for two hours and one minute will result in a total fee of NPR 75, and a four-wheeler will cost NPR 125 for the same duration.
The metropolis has also exempted persons with disabilities from parking fees at these facilities. Kathmandu Metropolitan City operates parking lots in areas such as New Road and the Old Bus Park.
For parking facilities operated in collaboration with other public entities or private sectors, charges will follow the terms outlined in respective agreements. In contrast, most privately operated parking lots charge a minimum of NPR 20 for two-wheelers, with rates going up to NPR 40 per hour.
